MetroSpin Project

Metrology for spintronics: A machine learning approach for the reliable determination of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Spintronics is a technology concept with low energy and low carbon footprint, relevant in various fields, including quantum physics, biotechnology, and medicine. Despite over 1500 annual publications showcasing scientific interest, spintronics faces reluctance in its widespread industrial adoption. One key obstacle is the lack of established metrology and measurement guidelines for spintronic parameters, making it risky for companies to invest. A novel approach using statistical methods and artificial intelligence (AI) for data analysis is proposed to address this challenge.

Principal investigators

Michaela Kuepferling

Dr. Michaela Kuepferling graduated from the University of Technology in Vienna, Austria. Her PhD studies were performed in the field of hard magnetic materials at the Department of Solid State Physics.

Since 2005 she is research scientist at INRiM, Italy, in the group of "materials, magnetism and spintronics". Her research focus is on spincaloritronics, spin dynamics and magnetic refrigeration.

Vito Puliafito

Dr. Vito Puliafito is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Politecnico di Bari (Italy) since June 2021. He received a degree in Electronic Engineering and a Ph.D. in Electromagnetic Modeling at the University of Messina (Italy) in 2007 and 2011, respectively.

He was a visiting Ph.D. student at the University of Salamanca (Spain), and, later, a visiting researcher at the Bogazici University, Istanbul (Turkey), and at FORTH Hellas in Crete (Greece). From 2019 to 2021 he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Messina.

Marco Madami

Dr. Marco Madami is an Associate Professor at the University of Perugia since October 2014. He obtained his PhD in 2004 from the same institution, focusing on the growth of epitaxial Fe and Co ultrathin films on GaAs and an investigation of their structural and magnetic properties.
